No way… .mkv is way better. Of course is the CPU Usage higher but the quality makes up for that. Just use the Zoom Player. Power DVD kinda sucks ;)

Oh man! I know zoom player/vlc/media.player.classic…etc.etc…all can handle .mkv. I do have all of them and more. But I disagree with Karl’s opinion about PowerDVD. I want to use the nvidia graphic card’s hardware decoding and purevideo etc AND PowerDVD’s undisputed audio output in the best possible way. Even if I don’t use the hardware acceeleration, PowerDVD comes with CLEV-2 (cybelink eagle-vision-2) which can produce much better quality video than any other player in this planet. I do have a powerful-enough cpu/RAM/v.card combo… All I want is QUALITY. I have obviously tried every codec and player out there and so I know the difference. It’s not something to quarrel about. I’m just sharing my experience with you. I can play 1080 pixel HD content smoothly enough. mpclassic doesn’t have any multi-band graphic equiliser. VLC does, but isn’t as good in video rendering etc (I do know about dx/opengl/hardware decoding etc, btw).
So, I think .264 or .avi is way more acceptable to those with proper pc-configs.

Hey dudes! Just wanted to let you know that I have finally resolved that issue. I am using atool called mkv2vob. What it does is remuxes the .h264 video and ac3 audio into a vob container which can be played in playstation etc. It takes a few seconds to do this and doesn’t require any configuration. PowerDVD can now playback this file with hardware acceleration and all those cool unique features which nothing else can provide. Just my 2 cents for PowerDVD fans.

The purpose of harware video acceleration is to relieve the cpu and use the graphics card. So, with HW acceleration, the cpu utilisation is almost nothing, AND you get much better video. All you need is a good graphics card. No, you don’t need 8800 ultra. Mine is 8600GT, and it works worders. (Only crisis sucks…)
And HW acceleration can be availed by media player classic and VLC player as well. But PowerDVD has some advantages. Nothing comes close to PDVD when it comes to stability. Yes, I do use mpclassic/VLC/jetaudio/zoom-player….
And BTW, all these players can also play the vob file great! The overhead isn’t anything substantial. Just try it and you”ll know the difference.
